Freedom doesn’t show up when life slows down.
It shows up when life speeds up—and you have to decide what gets handled.
That was my life these past two weeks.
I was in California trying to fit a lot into one trip: work, time with friends, time with my daughter, and a schedule that wasn’t about to slow down for me.
And hanging over all of it?
April 15th.
Now let me be very clear: I hate extending.
Not because it’s wrong. Sometimes it makes sense.
I hate it because unfinished financial stuff follows you.
You can function. You can show up. But part of your brain keeps circling back to what’s still open.
So I filed that baby on time. Even a day early.
And the relief was immediate.
More focus. More energy. More mental space.
When I booked the trip, I knew Todd's last day of work was on Friday, but I was hoping we would celebrate when I returned on Saturday. But this was his big night, and when it came down to it, while I thought I'd be fine with missing it when I left.
By Thursday, that all changed.
This wasn’t just another dinner.
It was Todd’s retirement. The start of the next chapter we’ve talked about for years.
And I knew exactly where I needed to be.
With my husband.
So I called Delta and changed the flight.
Red-eye Thursday night.
Home Friday morning.
Dinner that night.
And I made it.
That’s what freedom looks like to me now.
❌ Not fewer responsibilities.
❌ Not a perfectly clear calendar.
✔️ The ability to move when it matters.
✔️ To handle what needs handling, make the call, pay the extra cost, and be there when it counts.
Money doesn’t make life perfect.
It gives you options.
And last week, that mattered.
Because once I closed the loop on what was hanging over me, I could stop splitting my attention and show up fully.
That’s the kind of freedom I care about now.
Not perfection.
Just being there when it counts.
